Inspired Post: Dust If You Must

I was in the train on my way home when I read this poem, and I can’t help but smile. This short poem reminded me to enjoy life to the fullest and not take things for granted because time waits for no one. Enjoy life and do things that matters most, spend time with people you love and just be grateful for everything in your life. Enjoying life doesn’t necessarily mean an expensive vacation, or dining in luxury restaurants, or having modern and updated technology. Enjoy life according to your means, sometimes the best thing in are free.

Sea To Sky

 Dust If You Must

by Rose Milligan

Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there’s not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

Dust If You Must was written by Mrs Rose Milligan from Lancaster in Lancashire, England, and first published on September 15th 1998 in the 21st edition of The Lady (“in continuous publication since 1885 and widely respected as England’s longest running weekly magazine for women”).

    • Hi Sanjit,
      My interpretation of this poem is like saying life is short so live it to the fullest and do things that matter in your life before your life gets taken away. The poem uses examples like: Listen to music, read books, explore the outside world, cherish and spend time with friends, experience the beauty of nature etc.
