[VIDEO] Explore Chicago: Why the Evening Architecture Boat Tour is a Must-Do

The Architecture Boat Tour is one of the main atrraction that I have in my to do list in Chicago. In fact, if there is only 1 attraction that I can do, I will choose this one. I have always love being close to the water, it gives me a sense of peace and it made me relax.

During Summer or when the weather is good, I would often walk by the Vancouver Waterfront just to pass the time. Sometimes, I do not have any itinerary in mind, I will go to downtown just to walk by the water. I can proudly say that we have a beautiful Waterfront area that tourist and locals love. It is beautiful with the mountain view and the city view at the same time.

Chicago River Walk is a different story, definitely way above beautiful than our Vancouver Waterfront. The River Walk as it is is beautiful during the day, but wait untill you see it at night. It is by the River Walk where the Architecture Boat Tour starts, so you will get the view of the uniquely designed building while passing by it. I’ve done the Architectuer Boat Tour both during the day and evening and I have to say, both are worth doing.

Facts About Chicago

  • Chicago is the largest city of Illinois and third largest city of the United States after New York City and Los Angeles.
  • Chicago has various nicknames including “Chi-town”, “Windy City”, “Second City,” the “City of Big Shoulders”, and “American of big cities”.
  • A unique downtown Chicago feature is its multi-leveled streets, the most well-known of which is Wacker Drive. This double-decker street comprises an upper-level riverfront boulevard and a lower-level roadway for commercial and through traffic.Chicago’s downtown area is known as “The Loop,” which refers to the area encircled by the Chicago Transit Authority’s elevated (‘L’) train tracks. The CTA operates the nation’s second largest public transportation system. In an average year, the CTA provides more than 450 million bus and train rides.

Between the day and evening tour, I was able to enjoy the evening tour more because of the cooler temperature. In the end, I am very glad that I did both because both day and night tour gave a different vibe to the city and totally different expeience. For me, there is nothing like seeing the bright colorful lights that illuminate the night, it was magical.

General Information

How to buy ticket

I booked my day tour first online to secure a spotbut you can just go to the site and buy the ticket from there. For the evening tour, that is what I did as I wasn’t sure if I will have time to do it. I ended up having spare time at night so I decided to go for it.

Best Time for the Tour

During the day, it is best to get an early tour especially if it is going to be a hot day. This will make your tour more enjoayble and fun. I got a 10:00AM ticket as this was the only slot availble for the day I want. It was a hot day, and oh boy was it really hot up in the deck. I had to switch from the upper level to lower level to cool off from the heat of the sun.

Evening tour for me was better as the temperature was cooler. I took the 6:00PM because I wanted to do the sunset and evening tour at the same time. It was fantastic. With the cooler temperature and the city lights on, I was abe to enjoy the tour more. The only thing you have to be prepare is it could get colder at night being in the middle of the water. make sure to bring a thick jacket so you do not feeze on board.

So I guess it a choice between hot summer sun during the day or a colder breeze during the night. I leave that choice to you.

How long do you need to allocate for the visit?

The tour is set to 90 minutes (more or less) but they recommend to be at the meeting place 15 -30 minutes before your schedule. They will have you check in and then take you to the departure area. Give an allowance of 30 minutes because sometimes that boat wait to exit and enter the Michigan Lake could take a while depending on how many boat are waiting. In my day tour, we were able to make the entire tour 90 minutes but the night tour took a bit longer for because of the wait for the gate to open when exiting and entering the lake.

Boat Facilities

There is a bar in the lower level where you can buy refreshment but nothing more. There are also washroom in the same level.
