Let’s explore this simple yet satisfying recipe with a deep dive into the details!

Why I Love Bread Stick

Breadsticks are perfect for almost every occasion (at least for me )—whether as a side dish for soups and salads, a snack to munch on, or an accompaniment to party dips. Their crunchy texture and savory flavor make them irresistible. This is one snacking item that do not last long in my kitchen.

Ingredients You Already Have

What’s amazing about this recipe is the accessibility of its ingredients. Flour, garlic powder, salt, yeast, and water are pantry staples. Add sesame seeds for a nutty crunch, and you’re good to go. You can make it salted and plain, or even use everything bagel seasoning. For a sweet variation, I am thinking cinnamon suagr will be a great option.

Garlic for Bold Paper

Garlic powder infuses these breadsticks with a savory punch. It’s subtle yet impactful, elevating the simplicity of the recipe while pairing beautifully with the crunch of sesame seeds. I prefer using garlic powder so that it mixes and distribute well in the dough. If you want an even more pronouce garlic flavor, brush the spread out dough with garlic butter. Do this before cutting the dough nto strips.

The Magic of Sesame

Sesame seeds don’t just add texture—they add character! Their nutty aroma and golden appearance make these breadsticks both visually appealing and delicious. Plus, they toast up beautifully in the oven. There are other options if you do not like or have sesame seeds. Everything bagel seasoning is gerat option, or a blend of your favorite spices.

Let Yeast Works It’s Wonder

Don’t rush the yeast. Giving it time to proof and activate ensures your dough has the perfect structure. This step is key to achieving that crunchy exterior and tender interior. This bread stick do not require long resting period like when making soft fluffy bread but you still need to activate the yeast to give the bread stick a little lift.

Shaping the Breadsticks

Rolling out the dough and cutting it into uniform strips might seem basic, but it’s surprisingly fun. Twisting the strips adds a playful touch and helps them bake evenly. If you do not like to twist it, bake it flat.

Baking to Golden Perfection

The key to that satisfying crunch is all in the bake. Preheating your oven and keeping an eye on the breadsticks ensures they come out golden and fragrant—not too soft, not too burnt. You can adjust the cripiness by adjusting the baking time. The longer you bake, the crispier it will be. Just be careful and watc out as you do not want to end up with a burnt garlic sticks. These strips are thin so they bake quite fast.

Crunchy, garlicky, and sesame-speckled—what’s not to love? These breadsticks have a homemade charm that store-bought versions can’t compete with. Sharing them is an act of love.

Makign it Your Own

While the basic recipe is perfection, you can always experiment. Add dried herbs to the dough, sprinkle cheese on top, or try different seeds for a twist. Make it sweet variation by rolling it in cinnamon sugar. The possibilities are endless.

Ingredients:

  • 150g 1 1/3 cup Bread Flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon table Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast (or 1 teaspon Instant Yeast)
  • 90ml/ 6 tablespoon warm Water (110F)
  • 30ml/ 2 tablespoon Olive Oil

Instructions:

  • Activate the Yeast: In a glass, add warm water, sugar and active dry yeast
    • If using instant yeast, skip this step. Instead mix the instant dry yeast with the flour.
  • Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt and garlic powder. Pour the activated yeast and manually mix. Add the oil and conitnue mixing. The dough is quite compact and slightly dry at this stage. Knead for few minutes until it starts to come together. Cover and leave for 15 minutes. The extra rest period will allow the dough to absorb the liquid making it easier to knead. After 15 minutes, continue kneading the dough until smooth. You can add a little bit more water if the dough is s till tough to knead. Add 1 teaspoon at a time and knead about 3 minuts before adding more. The dough will not be as soft, smooth and elastic as when making dinner rolls. Cover and let rest for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl and knead in a flat surface. Flatten to 5mm thickess.
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and press with rollingpin to help the sesame seed stick to the dough. Flip the dough and sprinkle sesame seed on the other side. Press with rollong pin. Cover and let rest for 20 more minutes.
  • Using a pizza cutter and a ruler or rolling pin as a guie, cut the dough into strips, about 1/4-inch thick. You should be able to make about 21 pieces.
  • Twist the strips and arrange in the baking sheet.
  • Bake in a pre-heated 392F for about 18 – 20 minutes. Rotate the pan halfway the baking time for even baking.

Makes 20 – 25 pieces
