There’s something deeply comforting about the scent of apples, cinnamon, and sugar simmering away on the stove. Homemade apple butter is one of those simple pleasures that feels like a hug in a jar. This small-batch version uses just four small red apples and a handful of pantry staples—but the flavor? Pure autumn magic.
Whether you’re making it for yourself or gifting a little jar of joy, this recipe is easy to scale and endlessly versatile. Make it small batch or make it big for sharing, it will not disappoint you.
The Basics: Just Four Ingredients:
This recipe keeps things beautifully simple:
- 4 small red apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- Brown & Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
- Cinnamon Powder (optional but cozy)
- Pinch of salt (to balance the sweetness)
Only apples and sugar are essential—the rest just deepen the flavor. You can easily double or triple the batch if you’ve got more apples on hand or want to stock up for the season.

Simmer Low: Stir Low
Apple butter isn’t rushed—it’s a slow simmer that transforms apples into something silky and rich. Start by placing your chopped apples in a saucepan with the sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then cook over low heat for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Once the apples are soft and caramelized, blend until smooth (an immersion blender works wonders). Then return to the heat and simmer until thick and spreadable. The longer it cooks, the deeper the flavor. You will notice the color will get darker as it reduces turning into almost like a think smooth caramel sauce.

Flavor Twist & Add-Ins
Want to personalize your apple butter? Try these cozy variations:
- Vanilla bean or extract for warmth
- Maple syrup instead of sugar for a Canadian twist
- Clove or nutmeg for extra spice
- Splash of lemon juice to brighten the flavor
You can even mix apple varieties—try combining Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp for a more complex taste. For a more tart flavor, Granny Smith is a good choice.

How to Use Apple Butter, Beyond Just the Toast:
Apple butter is incredibly versatile. Here are some delicious ways to enjoy it:
- Spread on toast, biscuits, or pancakes
- Bread filling for cinnamon rolls or babka
- Swirl into oatmeal or yogurt
- Layer in grilled cheese with sharp cheddar

- Use as a glaze for pork or chicken
- Fill thumbprint cookies or swirl into muffins
- Add to charcuterie boards with cheese and crackers
- Gift in small jars with a handwritten label
It’s also a lovely addition to seasonal baking—think apple butter cinnamon rolls or spiced quick breads.

Storing & Sharing the Love:
Once cooled, store your apple butter in a clean jar in the fridge for up to two weeks. For longer storage, freeze in small containers or use proper canning methods.
This small batch makes about 1 cup—perfect for personal use or gifting. Tie a ribbon around the jar, add a cozy note, and you’ve got a heartfelt homemade present.

Turn Something Simple to Something Special:
Homemade apple butter is proof that simple ingredients can create something truly special. Whether you’re spooning it onto warm toast or stirring it into your morning oats, it brings a little autumn joy to every bite.
Want to make them ahead for a party? Prep the slices and toppings, then dip and decorate the morning of. They’re best enjoyed the same day, but honestly—they rarely last that long.
