[VIDEO] Chocolate Frosted Apple: A Cozy Treat with Big Flavor

When the air turns crisp and apples are at their peak, there’s something magical about combining tart fruit with rich, velvety chocolate. This Chocolate Frosted Apple recipe is a small-batch wonder—just one Granny Smith apple, a bit of melted dark chocolate, and your favorite toppings. It’s simple, satisfying, and endlessly customizable. Whether you’re craving a solo treat or planning a festive platter, this recipe scales beautifully. I’ve used this when I made my holiday charcuterie box gift last year and my friend loved it!

Why Granny Apple is a Choice:

Granny Smith apples bring the perfect balance to this treat. Their tartness cuts through the richness of dark chocolate, creating a flavor contrast that’s both refreshing and indulgent. Plus, their firm texture holds up beautifully when dipped and frosted.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can swap in other varieties like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady—but Granny Smith remains the classic choice for that bold, tangy bite. I like the crunchy, tangy and firm texture of this apple.

The Chocolate: Dark or Semi-Sweet, It’s Your Choice

There is no right or wrong choice here, choose what suits your taste preference. I like dark chocolate (70%) for dipping as it complements with the tangy sweet tart apple. Make sure to use a melting/dipping chocolate or a plain bar of good quality chocolate. Do NOT use chocolate chips as it doesn’t solidify and crisp as much as bar chocolates.

The Two Essentials: Apple + Chocolate

At its core, this recipe only needs two things:

  • 1 Granny Smith Apple, sliced into thick rounds or wedges. I find the wedges are better and easier for dipping as well as when eating it.
  • Melted Dark Chocolate (about ½ cup for one apple). If you have leftover, you can double dip for a thicker coating. Make sure to let the coated apple set before dipping again for second coating.

That’s it. No fuss, no fancy equipment. Just melt your chocolate (a quick microwave or double boiler works), dip or drizzle over the apple slices, and let the magic happen. I like to ass small amount of coconut oil when melting my chocolate to get a more fluid consistency.

Tip: Use high-quality chocolate with at least 70% cocoa for a deeper flavor. If you’re making a bigger batch, just double or triple the chocolate accordingly.

Toppings That make It Yours:

Here’s where the fun begins. Once your apple slices are coated in chocolate, sprinkle on your favorite toppings before the chocolate sets. Some cozy favorites:

  • Crushed nuts (almonds, pecans, hazelnuts)
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Sea salt or flaky salt
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Crushed pretzels
  • Pumpkin seeds or granola

You can go elegant or playful, depending on your mood. Want a fall-inspired twist? Try cinnamon sugar or a dusting of chai spice.

Small Batch, Big Impact:

This recipe is perfect for when you want just a little something sweet. One apple yields about 8 – 12 slices, which is ideal for a personal treat, a couple’s dessert, or a snack board addition. But if you’re hosting or gifting, it scales effortlessly.

Double it for two apples, triple it for three—just keep the chocolate ratio steady and prep your toppings ahead of time. You’ll have a beautiful, crowd-pleasing platter in minutes.

Frosted Apple

Serving & Storing Tips:

Serve your Chocolate Frosted Apple slices fresh for the best texture. If you need to store them, place them in a single layer on parchment paper in the fridge for up to 24 hours. The chocolate will firm up nicely, and the apples will stay crisp.

Make-Ahead

Want to make them ahead for a party? Prep the slices and toppings, then dip and decorate the morning of. They’re best enjoyed the same day, but honestly—they rarely last that long.

Edible Gift

This could pass as part of an edible gift, However make sure that the receiver is aware that this needs refrigeration to maintain the quality. I’ve made this once as part of the charcuterie board gift which was consumed the same day.
