  • Year-Round: Peggy’s Cove is open to visitors throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is during the daytime when everything is easily visible.
  • Summer Months (May to October): This period is the most popular for tourists. During these months, all shops, restaurants, and attractions are open. The area experiences less light pollution, making it great for stargazing at night.
  • Sunrise and Sunset: Peggy’s Cove is also a fantastic spot for sunrise and sunset. The lighthouse against the backdrop of beautiful skies creates a memorable experience. Bonus if you are going there to see the sunrise, there will be less crowd, but you have to wait until 11:00AM for the shops and restaurants to open.
  • Avoid Black Rocks: While exploring the granite rocks, be cautious and avoid the slippery black rocks near the water’s edge—they can be dangerous due to rogue waves. Do not take this warning for granted, several accidents had happened because of this and some even claimed lives, so be careful. No matter how beautiful the shot, it is not worth your life.

How to get to Peggy’s Cove

Certainly! Getting to Peggy’s Cove is an exciting part of the journey. Whether you’re driving, taking a taxi, or joining a tour, here are the options:

  1. Driving (Recommended):
    • From Downtown Halifax: Peggy’s Cove is approximately a 50-minute drive from downtown Halifax. Follow these steps:
      • Take Quinpool Road to the Armdale Roundabout.
      • From there, take the third exit for St. Margaret’s Bay Road.
      • At the set of lights, turn left onto Route 333 (aptly known as The Lighthouse Route), heading towards Peggy’s Cove.
      • Stay on Route 333 for about 36 kilometers (approximately half an hour) until it becomes Peggy’s Point Road.
    • Along the way, consider stopping at The Armview for coffee, tea, and delicious home-cooked meals. Also, take a moment to visit the SwissAir Flight 111 Memorial, which commemorates the tragic events of September 2, 1998.
  2. Taxi Service:
    • If you don’t have access to a vehicle, you can take a taxi to Peggy’s Cove.

    • Ambassatours offers comprehensive Peggy’s Cove excursions with friendly service and reasonable rates. I took a 4 hours package and it was a really great experience. We were given 2 hours to explore the place and the rest of the 2 hours are allocated for travel time.

Peggy’s Cove is great stop to explore other places. If renting a car, you can cover more areas in once day, or even stay overnight in other areas like Mahone Bay, Lunenburg or Sidney.

The ideal duration for visiting Peggy’s Cove depends on your interests and how much time you’d like to spend taking in the breathtaking views. However, here are some general guidelines:

  1. Quick Visit (30 minutes to 1 hour):
    • If you’re short on time, you can still enjoy the beauty of Peggy’s Cove by spending around 30 minutes to an hour.
    • During this time, you can explore the area around the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, take photos, and admire the rugged coastline. This will be a very quick visit though but will give you a chance to snap a good photos and videos.
  2. Leisurely Visit (1 to 2 hours):
    • For a more relaxed experience, allocate 1 to 2 hours.
    • Explore the lighthouse, walk along the granite rocks, and soak in the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. This is what I did. We were given 2 hours to explore the place. I felt still rush because I was taking a lot of photos and videos, probably 3 hours would be the best duration for me.
    • Consider visiting the souvenir shops and art galleries as well. With the allocated 2 hours, I was able to stop by at the souvenir shop to get my souvenir cap and also to grab a quick lobster roll from Tom’s Shack and a scoop of ice cream too. I was also able to quickly go around the village area. not too bad for 2 hours I would say.
  3. Sunrise or Sunset Visit:
    • If you’re a photography enthusiast or simply want a magical experience, plan your visit during sunrise or sunset.
    • Arrive a little earlier to find a good spot for capturing the golden hour light against the lighthouse and coastline.

Tips in visiting Peggy’s Cove

Here are some helpful tips for visiting Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia:

  1. Arrive Early:
    • Come in the morning, ideally before 9 am. Experiencing the sunrise at Peggy’s Cove is truly magical. The early hours also allow you to explore the area with fewer crowds. Tourist bus arrives around 1:00PM and shops/restaurants opens 11:00 AM.
  2. Stay Late:
    • Don’t rush to leave right after sunset. Stay a little longer! The place becomes even more picturesque as the sun goes down. Many visitors leave, but the beauty of Peggy’s Cove continues to unfold.
  3. Weekdays Are Ideal:
    • While residents and tourists alike love this iconic lighthouse, weekdays tend to be less busy than weekends. If you can, plan your visit during the week for a more tranquil experience.

Remember to stay safe while exploring the granite rocks, especially avoiding the slippery black rocks near the water’s edge. And don’t forget to capture those stunning views with your camera! If you’re hungry, the Sou’Wester Restaurant right in front of the lighthouse offers delicious meals, including lobster dishes and their famous homemade gingerbread. Enjoy your visit!

My experience visiting Peggy’s Cove

My visit to Peggy’s Cove was the highlight of my trip to Nova Scotia. I had 3 main itineraries in this trip and Peggy’s was the only one that happened.

Cabot Trail in Sidney was the 1sT one but unfortunately, they do not do pickup from Halifax. The other one was Lunenburg which was possible but I decided not to go for it anyway.

I took a bus tour from Ambassatours for the Peggy’s Cove trip. The trip duration was 4 hours, 1 hr each way and 2 hrs on our own to explore Peggy’s Cove. The trip cost was 72.00 CAD, with taxes it end up 92.50CAD.

The meeting place down the Halifax Harbour, at least 15-30 minutes before departure which was noon. There were 30 of us in the bus including the driver and the tour guide. The bus was brand new (purchased 2 days) so it was really nice and clean. Both the driver and the tour guide were very nice.

Peggy’s Cove is not big, so 2 hours is not bad although for maximum not rush exploration, I would say 3-4 hours will be recommended. This way you can do a slower pace, shop around, sit and enjoy the stunning view and have a sit down meal at a restaurant. I would highly recommend renting a car for a more relaxed trip at your own time.

Just like any other tourist, I was mesmerized with the beauty of the Peggy’s Cove Light House the moment I set eyes on it. It was postcard perfect in every angle.

I stayed mostly in the viewing deck, and got close to the lighthouse just by the base but I did not go farther than that. If I have more time I probably would.

I wanted to complete the experience by having a meal and to do some shopping and visit the village area. I was able to accomplished this although I had to rush.

I got something to eat at Tom’s Lobster Shack as the tour guide said this is the best place to get a lobster roll. It was 28CAD and it was ok, very generous with the lobster pieces but it was lacking some taste and flavor. It was a good experience though to share with you.

I went to explore the village area after that. There few small gallery and shop by the base, nothing crazy but the view from the base was also nice. You cannot see the lighthouse from there but there are spots in the village area that are very picturesque.

After that I rushed back, I still have 30 minutes left so I grabbed a scoop of ice cream at Tom’s Shack. I was surprised that the ice cream there was cheaper than anywhere in downtown that I tried. 4.00CAD per scoop and addl 1 dollar for scoop. In the downtown Halifax, 2 scoops could be better 7:00CAD – 8:00CAD.

We left exactly at 3:10 as scheduled and were back in downtown around 4:30PM. It took longer going back as it was close to rush hour.

I’ve seen quite a lot of lighthouses, but what made the Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is the location of it. It was place in a perfect spot with. amazing backdrop of water and the huge boulders of rocks around it. It was worth the trip, truly the best lighthouse.

What I cook when on vacation

It might sound unconventional, but really love making meals from time to time. Although trying new cuisine and food is really nice, I still miss home cooking. Luckily, the airbnb I stayed at is fully furnished and the kitchen was well equipped with what I need to cook simple easy meals. Since Halifax has quite an abundance of seafood, I cooked mostly Salmon and Cod dishes, with one day of cooking a steak for a change. It was great and I would definitely do this again given the chance.
