Do you find dinosaur interesting? Do you want to learn more about it? If you are in Alberta, and you have spare time to check other attraction other than the top visited one like Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise, Drumheller is a good additional attraction to visit if you like learning more about dinosaurs. It going to be a long drive though, so make sure that dinosaur and museum are really your thing before you decide to go there so that you will not get disappointed. It’s about 2 hours from Calgary where I was staying with my friend, almost 4 hours round trip.
I’m blessed to have friends in Calgary, I wouldn’t be able to explore and see places if not because of them. Of course I can take a tour, but it’s more fun when you’re visiting places with friends of common interest as yours. We went to Drumheller few years ago, and I thought it would be nice to share the experience with you to give you idea on what you can do in Alberta, there’s so much to see, so much to explore, so little time.
Royale Tyrrell Museum located in Drumheller. It about 1.5 hours from Calgary proper, one way. Entrance fee is 19 (Adult) and visit could be around 1-2 hours depending on how much you like read about the history.
Things To Bring
Depending on when you visit this place, always consider the weather. During the Summer season, Alberta could be quite hot in this area. In was hot but not too hot when we went there, we stayed mostly indoor walking around the museum but we also spend few minutes outside checking the ground.
- Proper walking or hiking shoes if you intend to explore the “Badland” and trails
- Hat, Sunglasses and Sunscreen are advisable to have when exploring the open area
- Drinking bottle with water if you intend to stay outside longer. If you do not have one, there is a cafeteria inside where you can buy water and other refreshments and snacks. You can have snack inside the cafeteria or outside the patio
- and of course, do not forget you camera to capture memories of your trip
It was quite an interesting museum, definitely out of the ordinary that is normally available in the city. This museum although fascinating for kids, was also very interesting for adult visitors. It was quite far, but if you are in the area anyway, so why not stop by. No since you made it this far already, why not stop to see the “Hoodoos” on your way back. It’s a nice sight to see to make the long drive even more worth it.
Plan ahead and make you itinerary. There is so much to see and explore. Looking for other Summer stops in Alberta, check out these posts.
