Dalgona Coffee

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a cold coffee beverage made with equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water. These 3 ingredients are then whipped up to make a whipped coffee cream that is then put on top of iced milk. Occasioanlly, this is serve and garnished with coffee powder, cocoa powder, crumbled biscuits, honey or caramel syrup. Dalgona coffee is a new beverage that emerged during the pandemic (originated from Korea), when coffee shops are closed and people are left but not choice make their own favorite coffee beverage at home. The name is derived from “dalgona”, a Korean sugar sweet, due to the resemblance in taste and appearance, though most dalgona coffee doesn’t actually contain dalgona.

Can I Make Dalgona Coffee with Ground Coffee Beans?

Unfortunately, you cannot. This is not just me saying it. It has something to do with the drying process of instant coffee which makes it have a stabilizer with it. The stabilizer found in instant coffee is what is responsible for creating a whipped consistency when mixed with sugar. This is why even without the addition of heavy cream, a whipped coffee cream is achieved.

Original Dalgona Coffee Ingredients Ratio

It has been said that the original ratio of ingredients when making Dalagona Coffee is 2 tablespoon each of instant coffee, sugar and hot water. Basically, if you want to make a large batch, just have all the 3 ingredients in equal measurement. I had tried this measurement 2 tablespoon measurement and I find it quite strong and that’s just because I was never a strong coffee drinker. If you are strong coffee drinker, then you should be fine with this. I had mine adjusted to use less coffee and the retain the 2 tablespoon of sugar. I would probably add more sugar when I make it again.

Can I Make This Without the Hand Mixer?

Yes you can. In fact, a lot of people are making this manually using a wire whisk. I have to give you a heads-up though that it will take an arm exercise to so that and a little bit more time to whip the coffee, people are saying about 4-5 minutes. It takes time, strength and patience but it is worth it. Juts have fun and enjoy the activity. You will definitely appreciate every drop when you are done making this Dalgona Coffee manually.

Serving Portion

In the video, I only made 1 serving but this can actually accommodate 2- 3 serving. I personally think serving for 3  is the best distribution for this. Again, this is someone who is not a strong coffee drinker. Although it looks physically better and more appealing with a lot of whipped coffee on top, I like mine with less that’s why I said the whipped coffee could be used to make 3 serving of drinks (1 cup of milk each or 1 1/2 if making it for two).

Can I Use Flavored Instant Coffee?

Absolutely! You can use the likes of hazelnut, vanilla, cappuccino, caramel or mocca. Using flavored instant coffee is a great way to make your own variation.

How Does it Taste?

It tasted like iced coffee, but a bit more fancy and elegant looking. Once the whipped coffee is mixed with the milk, it is going to be an iced coffee after all. It taste good, and I have I say it was so easy to make it, maybe because I used the short cut and used Hand mixer instead of doing it manual by whisks. For something that taste really nice and so easy to make at home, no wonder people are going crazy about this Dalgona Coffee. The magic is in the whipped coffee cream without the actual cream.

Tips in Making Dalgona Coffee

  • Use Instant Coffee and instant coffee only. Ground coffee beans will not work as it does not have an stabilizer that will make it whipped when mixed with sugar.
  • Aim for stiff peaks when whipping the coffee cream. This means the whipped coffee should be stable and will hold when turn upside down
  • Make sure the sugar is fully dissolved, this is one test to know that you have whipped the coffee cream long enough. Simply rub a small amount of coffee cream between you fingers and feel the granules of the sugar. If you cannot feel anything, that’s good enough. If you want to test it visually, just look at the mixture if you still notice granules of sugar. When sugar has fully dissolved, the mixture should be smooth like a whipped frosting.  You don’t have to stick to 2 tablespoon standard measurement. If you cannot handle strong coffee, you can decrease an same goes for the sugar. I had line adjusted and I still got a nice smooth stable whipped coffee cream.
  • Taste for sweetness, taste the whipped coffee cream for sweetness so you can adjust it to your preference. You can a dd a bit more sugar if you do not like strong coffee taste. I noticed that having a higher percentage of sugar to coffee actually produces a more stiff and stable whipped coffee cream.
