Long weekends are good opportunity to explore new places and spend time with friends. As short as it may be, I find that I quite love it. It’s not too exhausting moving from one place to another which means we get to explore a place longer without having to rush ourselves.

I’ve done my fair share of long trips (3 weeks), and although it was a beautiful and memorable trip, it was tiring trying too. In fairness, we were trying to make the most of the Europe trip so we keep on moving from place to place visiting only the top tourist attractions. At the last leg of trip, we were so exhausted and I personally did not get to appreciate and enjoy the place more.

That was a lesson learned for me. This time, I told myself I would focus more on short focus trips where I do not have to rush. The idea is to stop longer in a place, at least overnight and explore the place. Do some hiking, biking, city strolling and casual relax dining. You know that kind of dining experience where you can really enjoy the food, the place and the experience. No need to rush.

In this trip, that’s what my girlfriends and I did. The same friends I was with in the 3 weeks Europe trip.

Canmore, small quaint place in Alberta

I had been to Canmore before, but that was years ago. When we went here, we only did the Grassi Lake Hike and off we go. We did not really have the chance to explore the village.

This time around, we decided to stay overnight in Canmore. This gave us more time to explore the place and have more relax time just catching up. Canmore is not a large place to explore and day trip is definitely fine if that is the only time that you can spare. If doing a day trip, start early so you can finish the hike early and still have time to have a meal and walk around the small town.

Let’s Hike the Grassi Lake

Grassi Lake is one of the most visited hiking place in Canmore. It is a short hike, 1.7km with two route options. the duration depends on your physical condition and the route that you will choose. We took both routes, one going there and the other path for the return path. Let me show you around!

Interpretative Trail

The interpretative trail looks deceiving. In the map, it looks like this is an easier one compared to the upper trail. Although the distance is the same, it looks like the interpretative is easier but we were completely wrong.

This trail is not that difficult, but the elevation is quite high. The path itself is not paved, most areas are rocky, and there is a long steep stairs going up to reach the Grassi Lake. If you are in a good physical condition, then chose this route going to the Lake and take the upper trail going back. The take away is that you get to see both views from each side. The interpretative trail has definitely better view. You will pass by the lookout point for the falls, and a high view of the water and mountains. It was quite an effort to go up, but wort it.

There is a look out point before you reach the stairs. That is the look out point for the falls. That area gets crowded so be patient so you get the chance to get a good shot of the view.

This steep stairs will lead you to the Grassi Lake. Yes, there is a lake at the top. The falls is just an add on to the view along the way. Take your time going up, stop when you feel like it and enjoy the view.

Upper Trail

If you want an easier route, this is the one to choose. The downside of this route is that this is not as scenic as the interpretative trail but this one is a really easy hike. It’s a bit uphill but not as uphill and unpaved as the interpretive route. This was the route we took the first time I visited Canmore.

We ended up doing both route. Going up, we did the interpretative and going down the Upper trail. I wouldn’t recommend going down in the interpretive trail as it is too steep and will be dangerous. If you are in good physical condition, I suggest do as we did. This gives you opportunity to see both view in both route.

Once you get to the top, you will be greeted with an emerald lake with stunning mountain backdrop. The color of the wake was vibrant shades of blue and green. The first time I went here, I really did not know what to expect. I was surprised with how beautiful it was, it was worth the short hike.

How long do you need to visit Canmore?

The ideal duration for a visit to Canmore depends on your interests and how much time you have. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Quick Getaway (2-3 Days):
    • If you’re looking for a short escape, a 2-3 day weekend in Canmore is perfect. During this time, you can explore the stunning scenery, enjoy outdoor activities, and savor local cuisine.
  2. Moderate Exploration (5 Days):
    • For a more comprehensive experience, consider spending 5 days in Canmore. This allows you to delve deeper into the area’s natural wonders, visit nearby attractions, and immerse yourself in the mountain lifestye.
  3. Ultimate Adventure (7 Days or More):
    • If you truly want to soak in the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, plan for at least 7 days. This extended stay allows you to explore Canmore, neighboring Banff National Park, and other scenic spots. Every stop in the Rockies is breathtaking, so take your time and savor the experience.

We only stayed 1 day in Canmore and I persoanlly think it was more than enough for what we was hoping to do. The main itinerary for this 1 day trip was to hike the Grassi Lake, explore the cuisine and to explore the town without feeling rushed. We did accomplish all these and was even able to do an extra short hike, the Bow River Trail which is right in the town. I would say this is more of a walk than an extranneous hike.
