[VIDEO] Mochachino Latte

Holiday season calls for not only loads of treats and gifts but let us also not forget the warm drinks to keep us comfy and cozy all day long. I think this is the perfect time to share hot drinks and I thought I’d share this simple and easy, Mochachino Latte. It is basically a chocolate and coffee flavoured hot drinks, hence the name “Mocha”in it. To be honest, I did not really know what to call it so I decided Mochachino Latte sounds delish, so why not.

About This Recipe

  • Ease in Making the Recipe: This recipe is so easy you can make this in less than 15 minutes! Yes, as fast as 15 minutes (or less), you can enjoy a cup of hot Mochachino Latte. This drink is decadent and simply delicious. If you are more into coffee that hot chocolate, this is the one for you. It is like a mashup between coffee and hot chocolate in one cup. A warm hug in a cup is what it is.
  • Ingredients: 6 ingredients is all you need to make this drink. The ingredients are all simple and easy to find, maybe you already have it in your kitchen. The base will be a full fat milk and flavoured with coffee using instant coffee powder (for all of us who do not have brewed coffee at home) and a good quality dark chocolate for intense flavor. I’ve added pinch of salt to enhance the flavour but it will not make the drink salty. It just helps to intensify the coffee and chocolate flavor of the drink. I added a milk foam on top for an even creamier drink but you can skip it if you do not feel like it. I used half and half but if you have whipping cream, that will give a thicker creamier foam.
  • Texture, Taste & Flavor: Decadent, indulgent and sinfully delicious in every sip 🙂 It is creamy, with a nice coffee and chocolate flavor, mocha for short.
  • Make-Ahead: Yes you can make this ahead of time. Sometimes I make 3 servings of this and keep it refrigerated. When ready to serve, I simply pour it in a microwave safe cup and reheat it. Don’t forget to stir the drinks before pouring in the mug as some of the chocolate will settle at the bottom and it need to be stirred to distribute again.

Substitution

brewed coffee instead of Instant coffee powder: If you have leftover brewed coffee, that will make a better drink as it has stronger flavor. Use as much or less as you want and add milk to it. Again, as much or as less milk as you like. The ingredients in this drink doesn’t have to be precise. You can adjust it to your liking and make it your own flavour.

Brown sugar for any other sweetener: I used brown sugar because I like the deep flavour of it. It match the coffee and chocolate flavor. You can use any sweetener that you prefer, as much or as less as you like. I only used 1 tablespoon as I do not like my drink too sweet.

What Chocolate to Use

Let’s talk about chocolate. Use a good quality dark chocolate and NOT the chocolate chips used for baking. I used my favourite chocolate bar and I chopped it for this drink. I prefer the dark chocolate for its intense flavor and higher chocolate content. It made the drink decadent without being too sweet. If you like semi-sweet chocolate, that will work too but it will be in a milder and sweeter side.

No to White Chocolate

How about white chocolate? I would not recommend it unless you want a more coffee flavor without any chocolate flavor in it. After all, white chocolate is not chocolate, can you believe that? It doesn’t have any cocoa solids hence making it not a chocolate. However, it does contain cocoa butter, sugar, and milk solids, which give it a creamy texture and sweet flavour.

Sugar or No Sugar

It is up to you.I added 1 tablespoon brown sugar as I do not like my drink too sweet, but I don’t want it to be bland as well. Work on what you like, after all this is your drink to enjoy.

Enjoy a cup of this hot drink and serve with cookies on the side. I served this with lady fingers which was perfect combination.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Full Fat Milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon instant Coffee Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar ( or any other desired seasoning)
  • 50 grams chopped Dark Chocolate
  • 1/4 cup Half & Half
  • pinch of Salt

Instructions:

  1. Bring the milk into a simmer. Do not boil in high heat as this can scald the milk. Add instant coffee powder, sweetener, pinch of salt and chopped dark chocolate.
    • Alternatively, if you have left over brewed coffee, you can use that and simply add milk. You may need to adjust how much milk you add depending on how strong the brewed coffee.
  2. Simmer until the chocolate has melted. For a smoother consistency, transfer in a blender and blend. This will also create a nice foam on top.
    • Alternatively, you can use electric foam stick.
  3. Whip the half and half cream while the drink simmer.
  4. Pour the drink in a glass and pour the half and half foam.
  5. Dust with cocoa powder (optional)

Serves 1

Recipe Notes:

  • Use good quality dark chocolate for a more intense flavor
  • If you do not have dark chocolate, you can substitute it with 1 tablespoon Cocoa Powder
  • Do NOT use chocolate chips as this doesn’t melt easily
  • Use desired sweetener and adjust according to your preference.
