Crown Fountain in Millenium Park is one of the recommended site to visit when in Chicago. I was lucky enough that the Millenium Park is only few minutes away from Arlo Hotel where I stayed. I literally pass by this fountain most of the days that I was int the area. I was able to see it early morning when there are not a lot of people, during lunch time when the park is a bit busy but not too crowded and in the afternoon when people gather in the area to admire this unique fountain.

Crown Fountain in Millennium Park
The Crown Fountain is a major attraction located in Millennium Park, Chicago, Illinois, USA. It consists of two 50-foot glass block towers that project changing images of Chicago citizens and has water flowing through a black granite reflecting pool. The interactive nature of the Crown Fountain makes it a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, especially during the summer months.

Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the Crown Fountain in Millennium Park is a major addition to the city’s world-renowned public art collection.
The fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images from a broad social spectrum of Chicago citizens, a reference to the traditional use of gargoyles in fountains, where faces of mythological beings were sculpted with open mouths to allow water, a symbol of life, to flow out.

Plensa adapted this practice by having faces of Chicago citizens projected on LED screens and having water flow through an outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths. The collection of faces, Plensa’s tribute to Chicagoans, was taken from a cross-section of 1,000 residents.

What maade it quite unique for me is the concept of the fountain. It definitely is not the traditional fountain that you would expect like Buckingham Fountain or any other open water fountain. The loca’ls faces showing in the display also made it interesting.

The founatin position almost in the center of busy surrounding and tall buildings makes it even more eye catching. Something that you would not expect to be there, but at the same time a welcome sight to see.

The fountain itself is the major attraction, there is nothing much to do here. Probably 30 minutes or less is more than enough unless you want to sit down on the bench to relax and have a snack. The Crown Fountain is inside the Millenium Park so you can move on and explore the other areas in Millenium Park once you are done here.
Make sure to visit iconic Millenium Park landmark “The Bean”. I have a separate video for this but unfortunately when I went there the area was close and under construction so I do n ot have a clean shot of the instillation.
That is all I have for you today. Until my next adventure, Bye!!
