It’s a beautiful sunny day so far and today I am travelling to Nova Scotia, Canada. I’ve been to most provinces in Canada but never to Nova Scotia. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time but I never get the push to really make it happen. I finally decided to do it and just go for it.
You might be googling now or asking chatGPT to check what’s in Nova Scotia, why there? Good question. 4 reasons why I decided to visit Nova Scotia, Halifax:

1. Cabot Trail – I love the long and winding road of Cabot trail. The beautiful scenery and the amazing road trip.
2. Peggy’s Cove – I have a thing for light houses and even more for this one. The first time k saw this in YouTube I told myself I have to go there, see the place and eat a lobster roll 🙂 food is always in my itinerary.
3. Harbour Front – I love walking and running along harbour front. Even just a simple walk early morning or late afternoon to watch the sunrise and sunset is a must activity for me when I go on places. Halifax have 4km harbour front which is said to be the longest in the world, can you believe that?
4. Lobster! Why not? When in Nova Scotia, lobster is a must and it just so happen I love seafoods in general. Lobster is quite expensive in Vancouver and maybe in most places. I look forward to feasting on seafoods in Halifax.
I took a red eye flight (10:10PM). It’s a 6 hrs flight from Vancouver to Halifax but I have a 1 hour connection from Toronto Pearson to Halifax International Airport.

Quite a stressful start
My strip started in a stressful mode. There was a bit of a delay in the train and then my luggage handle broke on my way to the airport. Nonetheless, I was able to make it on time and I was able to check in my luggage. What happens next when I pick it up is another story that you will read later in this post.
The flight was delayed by 1 hour, we were all boarded inside the plane and was there for an hour before it depart at around 11:16PM instead of 10:10PM. The good thing is that my connection is in the same terminal as my arrival terminal and with the same airline carrier Porter. The gate is also beside each other which made it very convenient. I was seated at the exit row so I got an extra legroom which was great after 4 hours of seating in a smaller leg room.

The connection flight is less than 2 hours, I was at Halifax around 11. I was relief at the same time worried in the condition of my luggage. The luggage was in really bad shape. Whoever handled it forcefully removed the unhinged cover that holds the handle. Anyway, I managed to get to the condo by using my belt to attached to the handle so I can still pull it easily. It worked! I am definitely going to get a new suitcase for my next rip.
Uber to Downtown
I took an Uber from the airport to my rental condo in Downtown Halifax. The trip costed me 58CAD and the drive was about 30 – 45 minutes. It was a nice ride, the Uber driver was very friendly and we chat along the duration of the trip. Although taking an Uber was a bit more expensive than other transportation options, this was what best worked for my circumstances.

My temporary home sweet home
I finally arrived at the rental condo and its was very nice, clean and it has an amazing view from the living room. The host was so kind enough to leave few groceries as a starter (eggs, milk, butter, jam, banana, apple and 8L of bottled water). I had a really long day and did not get any sleep during the trip. I slept until 3PM and then I left to have dinner outside.

Off to Halifax Waterfront for Dinner
What do you eat for dinner on your first day in Halifax? I decided to go to the Salt Yard in Halifax Harbour. Basically, this is where you find food kiosk and sit down restaurants around. Just like what you would expect from a tourist, I head straight to get a lobster roll, first on my list. I got it from Dave’s Lobster. It cost 31CAD, comes with chips and drinks. Yes, it was really expensive and sad to say it was not as good for the price.
Explore, Explore, Explore
Halifax Harbourside
The Harbourside is hard to miss if you are in Halifax because this is basically where more tourist (and locals) hangout. This and the nearby areas are were you can find places to eat and drink. This was the first place I went to when I arrived on my first day.
This was close to my rental condo and I was really tired to go any farther than this. I hangout in this place almost every time I was in the downtown area. Halifax downtown is not that big, and Halifax itself is not a big place. The concentration of what you can do is in the downtown area so this place is often packed with people especially when the weather is nice. The weather was not cooperating when I was in Halifax but I am very thankful I had few nice days to enjoy the harbour. The video above was on my first day and you can see that it was a bit gloomy but still there are a lot of people hanging out in this area.

Peggys’ Cove
If there is only one thing that you have to visit when you are in Nova Scotia, visit this place. I’ve seen quite a lot of Lighthouse but this one top all of them.
The placement of the lighthouse was picture perfect. You can spend 1/2 day here if you are renting a car or if you don not have a car you can go on a bus tour like what I did. You will have 2 hrs to spend to stroll around, take photo, eat and shop. It was truly breathtaking, one of those places that you see in movies.

Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
Are you into history? Then this place is for you. Citadel is situated in the downtown area which makes it very accessible. This is a perfect activity to add when you visit the Harbourside as they are very close. 2-3 hours is more than enough but if you really want to be immersed with all the history, half day it is.
Come early if you can so that its s not crowded. Sunny days and good weather is always recommended so you can explore both the inside and the ground of the Citadel. There are numerous exhibits inside, gift shop, cafe and they also do tours if you are interested in that. I tour the place on my own so that I can take control of my time and where I want to spend more or less time. This is one iconic attraction that is recommended when in Halifax, but if you are short of time, I wouldn’t say it is a must.

Halifax Public Garden
Looking for a FREE activity? Check out the Halifax Public Garden. This is located in the downtown area as well so you can visit the Harbourside, Citadel and Public Garden all in one day.
It is a large garden with nice landscapes and plenty of sitting area. Almost every area ion the garden there were seats everywhere. There is a cafe inside for light snacks, drinks and gelato. This was close to where I stayed so I visited this more often that I planned.

Halifax Seaport Farmers Market
Another FREE activity that you can do when in Halifax is to visit the Seaport Farmers Market. This is an indoor farmers market so it is a good activity when the weather is not good. They have mix of different things inside from food kiosk, apparels, produce, crafts, jewelry, baked products and more.
The Farmers Market is inside a pavilion and at the very end of t he Harbourside. If you are in the waterfront area, you can add this to your itinerary but make sure to check the schedule as they are not open whole day.

Point Pleasant Park
Another FREE activity is visiting Point Pleasant Park. Is it a must thing to do? No, but if you have spare time and looking for things to do, then you can add this. This is quite a huge park and if you have a furry friend with you, this is a dog friendly place too.
There are some historical and ecological marked sites that you can visit. I visited few historic sites and some that are close by. They have seating area, bring some snack and drinks with you if you plan to stay longer as there is no food stalls inside the park.

Halifax Public Library
Not an attraction but a nice place to visit when in downtown area. This library is very modern and organized and they have space for everyone, adults and kids alike.
You have 5 levels to choose from and every level is very nice. Go up the 5th floor and have some snacks and drinks at the sunroof.

What I cook when on vacation
It might sound unconventional, but really love making meals from time to time. Although trying new cuisine and food is really nice, I still miss home cooking. Luckily, the airbnb I stayed at is fully furnished and the kitchen was well equipped with what I need to cook simple easy meals. Since Halifax has quite an abundance of seafood, I cooked mostly Salmon and Cod dishes, with one day of cooking a steak for a change. It was great and I would definitely do this again given the chance.
