What is a vacation without the “Food Trip”? If you are not familiar with the word “food trip”, this is actually a word we use in the Philippines when we want to eat small amount of different food. I kinda think of it like a food hopping :). I like to do this when I am on vacation but more on local regular food rather than fine dining food. I would probably do 2-3 nice sit-down meals in restaurants but most of the time I just like trying food from different places, small pieces at a time.
I would usually do some research on recommended food to try in the place I visit but I leave room to be flexible to just try what I feel like when I see it. Novia Scotia is quite popular with seafood dishes, Lobster to be specific, the likes of steamed lobster, buttered lobster, lobster roll, lobster Mac & cheese etc. I planned to have at least 1 sit down meal to try a full lobster and lobster roll, these two are my main must try in Halifax.

The rest will just whatever I feel like that day for what I see when I walk around the area. Let me share with you what I had on my time in Nova Scotia. I created short videos so you can fully appreciate it.
Dave’s Lobster
The first thing in my list to try is a lobster roll and a lobster dinner. It was past lunchtime so I decided tk get a lobster roll from Dave’s Lobster in the waterfront harbour. It is as described by people who tried it. It does taste good but it was too expensive for the price and serving portion. For 31CAD, if you are hungry this will not fill you up. It was good for a try and experience but not something that I would do again.

Food Cost: 31.00 CAD
I ordered the half and half lobster which is basically 1/4 lbs, half local style and half fancy. Half was made with creamy dressing and half taste like plain buttered with lemon.
Beaver Tail:
Beaver tail was not on my list of item to try as I have tried this before but after eating the lobster roll from Dave’s, I was still very hungry and was craving for something sweet. So beaver tail it is.

Food Cost: 6.95 CAD
They have quite a lot of variations to try but I got the classic cinnamon sugar. It was good, but again I was surprised how the size drastically decreased. It used to be wider and bigger now it is smaller and more expensive. Shrinkflation 🙂
Simply Put: Tuna Poke Bowl
Simply Put is a kitchen, coffee and bakery place. As the name goes, they have hot savory meals, breakfast and brunch items, hot and cold drinks and desserts.

Food Cost: 18.50 CAD
I ordered Tuna Poke Bowl as I was really hungry for something savory, like a real meal. It was ok, but not something I will order again. I’m not being picky but the rice was so dry and the wrong type of rice for poke bowl. It was basmati rice and since the poke bowl doesn’t have much dressing on it, the entire dish felt like dry. The flavor was good though.
Piece of Cake: Triple Chocolate
Piece of Cake is a small cafe in the Halifax Waterfront Harbour. It is a bit hidden at the back along with other small shops. It’s a quaint, cute place. They have amazing cakes, cookies, as well as hot and cold beverages.

Food Cost: 13.00 CAD
I ordered the Triple Chocolate Cake and London Fog Latte. The cake was great! It was a 3 layers cake with chocolate cake, white chocolate mouse and dark chocolate mousse.
Pane e Circo Salumeria: Tiramisu Cake:
This is an Italian cafe in the heart of Downtown Halifax. Very cozy and modern which made it very attractive and inviting to go inside.
They have breakfast sandwiches which all looks so good, cakes and pastries, hot and cold drinks and more.

In the Queens branch, I tried the Tiramisu Cake which looks nice. The price was 13.08 per slice which I have to say was quite expensive for a slice of cake. It was ok, but not something that I will order again. I find it too sweet and sugary in taste rather than smooth and creamy, and the sponge cake was overly soaked. Anyway, the place was nice so I still had a nice time.
Pane e Circo Salumeria: Pastrami

Food Cost: 14.00 CAD
I also tried their Pastrami which caught my eyes the first time I was there. I got it from the lower waters branch which was a lot smaller. I had it to ho and are it outside the Waterfront.
It was a good sandwich. The bread was nice and cherry and perfectly toasted, the pastrami was not too salty and they put a generous amount too. The cheese was oozing and melting and taste good too.
Salty’s: Seafood Platter
They say a visit to Nova Scotia is not complete without having anything seafood, Lobster to be specific. There are a lot of restaurants offering Lobster dinner along the harbour. The pricing is a market price which vary every day, but most of the restaurant have same pricing, +/- 5CAD.

Food Cost: 36.00 CAD
Between 5 Fishermen, Salty’s and McKelvie, I decided to go to Salty’s restaurant. This is a waterfront restaurant which gave an edge on my section to pick it.
Instead of ordering just Lobster Dinner which is basically 1 lb of Lobster, potato salad and slaw (cost between 60 – 63CAD) I decided to get the seafood platter. The platter includes half chilled lobster, 1 large battered fish, 3 shrimp and 3 scallops plus a sides of potato and coleslaw. All these for 36CAD which I think is a good deal. The serving portion was more than enough for me and it taste good with unlimited sauce.
That’s about it! Which one do you find interesting? let me know in the comments. Until my next adventure, Byeee!
Peace By Chocolate: Shortbread Cookie

Food Cost: 3.00 CAD
Dairy Bar: Kiddo Oreo Sundae
I passed by this Dairy Bar Kiosk and I was intrigued by the line up so I decided to go back and try it. They have very few items in the menu. They have 2 items for kids size and the rest are large and cones.

Food Cost: 6.50 CAD
I got the Kiddo Oreo Sundae and it was nice. It wasn’t too sweet and it was creamy. If you can eat more, go for the large one which cost 9.50CAD.
Glitter Bean Cafe: Fudge Brownie
I came across Glitter Bean on my first day in Halifax. It was close to where I stayed and although the outside facade looks rundown, I decided to go inside to check it out. Turned out to be a nice cozy homey place inside.

They have sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and pastries too. I already had my breakfast so I had a brownie to instead. It was a nice brownie I have to say. It was still warm when I got it, it was moist and it was not too sweet. It has a very dense compact texture and a very nice chocolate flavor.
Rib Fest:
I was lucky enough to be in Halifax for the Canada Day long weekend where they had this Rib Fest in Dartmouth. It was less than 15 minutes ferry ride away from Halifax Waterfront so for me it was a no brainer for me to be there. It was a weekend and a sunny day too. The entrance fee was 2.00 CAD, a lot cheaper than when they had this in BC which was 5.00CAD.

Food Cost: 27.00 CAD
They have a lot more participating BBQ vendors (about 5) but they all seem to have the same pricing. I got the combo which comes with 1/3 rack of ribs and 1/4 chicken. I added corn bread and slaw which totalled to 27.00 CAD, it’s 21 CAD without the sides.
The BBQ’s were really tender, fall of the bones tender. It was nicely seasoned too. Overall, I was happy with my purchase.
Tom’s Shack: Lobster Roll
Tom’s Shack is one of the recommended place in Peggy’s Cove to try Lobster Roll. They have dine in and takeout options, but a very limited menu items. They have sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and ice cream. The lobster roll cost 28.00, no drinks included. I have to say, they used a lot of lobster in the roll and big chunks too.

Food Cost: 28.00 CAD
As for the taste, well it was ok but could had been better if they added more flavoring to it. It’s a bit bland which was such a shame as they were very generous with the lobster pieces. Nonetheless, compared to Dave’s Lobster in Salt Yard Halifax, they are a lot better. Would I try it again, maybe not but it was certainly a nice experience and a nice way to end my trip at Peggy’s Cove.
What I cook when in vacation
It might sound unconventional, but really love making meals from time to time. Although trying new cuisine and food is really nice, I still miss home cooking. Luckily, the airbnb I stayed at is fully furnished and the kitchen was well equipped with what I need to cook simple easy meals. Since Halifax has quite an abundance of seafood, I cooked mostly Salmon and Cod dishes, with one day of cooking a steak for a change. It was great and I would definitely do this again given the chance.
