They had been in Steveston for 7 years and I did not even know this store existed. How is that even possible?! Somebody mentioned this place to me several months ago but I totally forgot about it until today when I went to Steveston to get chocolate at Sinfully The Best (STB). The general manager at STB recommended this place to me and so I decided to pay them a visit.
The Sweet Spot is a fairly small bakery shop located at First street in Steveston Village, Richmond BC. Because of the small space, they mostly cater for to go items although they have small sitting area, more like a long side table with high chairs.
I went for a visit on a Sunday, and I decided to stay a bit and enjoy my dessert while I wrote this blog. I like hanging out in cafe when I am writing my blog because it made me feel relax. For me, it’s the perfect chance to capture my experience both on how the food taste like and the ambiance of the place.
Oh dear, I tell you, I can foresee that this place going to put me into a lot of trouble, big time! This small cafe is truly a gem when it comes to pastry, like Paris pastry quality. The pastries are freshly baked in-house, and they all look and taste sinfully delicious. I had a really hard time deciding which one to try first. I just want to try them all which I know is not possible in one visit, and so I made several trip to try few of their items. Here’s how it goes.
Paris Brest with Pastry Cream
An elevated version of cream puff pastry. The pastry shell has a crunchy outside texture and the vanilla pastry cream has very light and smooth texture. The chocolate caramel frosting on top was decadent with just the right sweetness. Good choice, it was heavenly treat indeed.
I stayed inside while finishing my dessert. People started coming in, mostly getting something to go. It seems that this little cafe is known by quite a lot of people in Steveston area, visitors and locals alike. I maybe 7 years late, but now that I know this place, I will be stopping by every chance I have.
White Chocolate Mousse, Passion Fruit Creme and Chiffon Cake
I hesitated ordering this cake as I was craving for something with chocolate, and ended up being so thankful ordered this. This cake literally melts in your mouth. The combination of white chocolate and the sweet and tangy flavor of passion fruit was unbeatable. The texture of the mousse is so smooth and light. I love that there’s a chiffon cake as base, it made the cake not too overwhelming and every layer complement each other. I would definitely recommend this one. A MUST try indeed!
Hazelnut Dacquoise
Ohhhhh, this is my ultimate favorite!! It’s perfection in every single bite and every single layer. The chocolate mousse is very smooth and soft, the perfect sweetness and chocolate flavor, the bits and pieces of hazelnut is a definite bonus. I highly recommend you try this when you visit this place.
Fresh from the oven
Their parties are all freshly baked in-house which is fantastic. They offer both sweet and savory items, although they have more variety of sweet items. They also offer to go freezer savory items, the likes of curried chicken pot pie, meatballs, green curry pork cheeks, house made soups and homemade ice cream. I haven’t tried any of it, but I am looking forward to take my pick in any of their savory items.
I got so interested with this bakery and decided to check their website. For someone like me who have a great passion for baking, I find the story on how they started really inspiring. Two ordinary talented and hardworking individual, who took the risk, dreamed big and made it. Owing my own bakeshop someday is something I like to think, and although I cannot pursue it now, I will just keep on coming for a sweet visit to enjoy their pastry and to support small local business. I hope you’ll do the same if you happen to be in the area. I promise you, you wouldn’t regret it.
So when in Steveston Village, stop by at Sweet Spot and treat yourself for a little taste of Paris. Until my next food adventure! This is SweetnSpicy your travel buddy!
