What is Shawarma?
Shawarma is a popular Middle Eastern dish that originated in the Ottoman Empire, consisting of meat cut into thin slices, stacked in a cone-like shape, and roasted on a slowly-turning vertical rotisserie or spit. Traditionally made with lamb or mutton, it may also be made with chicken, turkey, beef, or veal.

I love Shawarma! I got introduce to Shawarma only when I moved here in Canada. I cannot remember having I back in the Philippines (13 years ago). Shawarma is one thing that I wouldn’t get tired of eating. It is simply delicious, fresh and when done right, it is flavorful and juicy. I’ve never thought of making my own at home until today. The first I did was to find a shawarma spice mix, I thought it won’t hurt to do short cut sometimes. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in the grocery when I normally shop. I assume this will be available in specialized Mediterranean stores but I don’t have time to look for it.

After getting frustrated looking for it, I decided to make my own Shawarma spice mix, it may not be authentic but it turned out quite great, at least to my liking. I’ve done some research and watch some video, and although there is no recipe that is 100% the same, most recipes have similarities in terms of spices used. I guess everyone have their own version of it, and this is mine. I removed some spices that I don’t like or I don’t have, like clove and, all spice . I you like these spices and you have them, you can add about 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp depending on how strong you like the taste of the spice.

This is a very simple recipe, a one step recipe is what I call this. The most that you will do is to gather up the spices after that all that is left is to mix them together. Your just 10 spice mix away to a great homemade Shawarma spice mix. Let’s get started and mix it!
