My obsession with fresh Cherry 🍒 ended up with my fridge having so much Cherry, which is heaven for me except that I have to eat other food that also needs space in my refrigerator. Cherry doesn’t last as long so either I eat or make them into a drink or I freeze them for future use. Lately, I had been using it to make smoothie bowl. If you are a regular of my blog, you have an idea how much I enjoy making smoothie bowl. I had been sharing 1 smoothie bowl recipe every week , maybe up until it gets too cold for a smoothie.
This week, I am keeping it very simple. Only 3 ingredients to make the base smoothie, the toppings are whatever you like. That’s the fun part of making smoothie bowl, decorating it with toppings. This 3 Ingredients Cherry Smoothie Bowl was made with frozen Cherry, water to help the mixture blend easily and sugar syrup for sweetener, just 1 tablespoon. The toppings that I used are Cherry, Banana, Blueberry, chia seed, and shredded coconut. It’s almost like a sorbet, but softer.
While drinkable smoothie is great, smoothie bowl are even better and more filling. Smoothie bowl are creamier, thicker and are loaded with bits and pieces of fruits, nuts, seeds and other toppings that you enjoy eating. It is a very easy, filling, refreshing breakfast for when you do not have a lot of time to sit down and enjoy breakfast. You can even have it to go, just don’t forget to bring a spoon with you to scoop uo those extra treats you got on top of it.
Difference between Smoothie and Smoothie Bowl
Smoothie is more of a drink where you can use a straw, or drink on its own. It has a lighter, more liquidy consistency which makes it more drinkable. It is quite light to the point that if you put anything on top, diced fruits or granola, it will sink slowly if not immediately. Most of the time, it is served in a glass or mug or any beverage cup.
Smoothie Bowl on the other hand has a thicker consistency. In fact, most of the time, you use a spoon to eat it and only maybe a straw to sip it while it starts to melt. It is usually served in a bowl, and has toppings on it. The likes of sliced fruits, granola, nuts and seeds. It is thick enough for the toppings to stay on top and not sink.
Although the base ingredients for smoothie and smoothie bowl is almost the same, the difference is in the proportions. For a Smoothie bowl to be thick, it uses less liquid. I’ve read some recipe even use rolled oats and chia seed to get a thicker blend. But based on my experience, the key thing among others is using frozen main ingredients, and that is the fruit, and sometimes some frozen yogurt too. This on top of using less liquid guarantees a thick stable smoothie bowl.
You can get by using a simple blender, but a high powered heavy duty blender works best because of the thick consistency and less liquid.
Tips for a Creamy Thick Smoothie
This smoothie is so easy to make, it’s so creamy, so delicious and so refreshing. Here’s a few tips to guarantee a delicious creamy smoothie
- Frozen Fruits – this is key to making a smooth and creamy smoothie. Frozen fruits makes the smoothie creamy and smooth and will not require use of crashed ice. This makes the smooth pure of fruits and less water from ice. Have the fruit in the freezer at least overnight.
- No Ice Please– When you use frozen fruits, that already eliminates the need to use ice.
- Use as Less Liquid as Possible – Liquid is needed to help blend the ingredients, but adding too much could end up having a runny consistency.
- 3 tablespoon Water
- 1 cup frozen Cherry
- 1 tablespoon Sugar Syrup (can be substituted with sweetener of your choice)
- sliced Banana
- Shredded Coconut
- Chia Seed
Simple Sugar Syrup
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1/4 cup granulated Sugar
How to Make Simple Syrup
Making simple syrup is super easy and a great way to sweeten cold beverages. Follow the ratio, depending on the thickness of consistency, follow the same instruction
- Simple Sugar Syrup Ratio – 1:1 (1 cup sugar , 1 cup water)
- Rich Sugar Syrup Ratio – 2:1 (2 cups sugar, 1 cup water)
- Heat the water: Heat the water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until hot, but do not bring to a boil.
- Stir in the sugar: Add the sugar and stir until fully dissolved.
- Cool and store: Let the syrup cool to room temperature before using or storing. Using a funnel if needed, transfer the simple syrup into a glass jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. The syrup will thicken as it cools so it is very important to let it cool to get a thick syrup consistency.
- Add water, sugar syrup and frozen Cherry. Make sure to add the water first so that it blends easily. Blend until smooth and thick If needed, stir manually from time to time to help move some of the bits and pieces or fruits that may have gotten stuck. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired.
- Transfer in a serving glass and garnish with toppings of your choice.
- Wash remove the seed. Arrange Cherry in a baking tray in a single layer. Freeze overnight.
- .Use liquid sweetener, it dissolves and mix better. Using granulated sugar often leaves I dissolved sugar granules
- ALWAYS use frozen fruits
