It’s Spring!

Hello There!! Spring time is here and I am so excited to welcome it. I had been waiting for Spring to come and now it is finally here. We don’t get as much snow in Vancouver as compared to other places but still, the thought of Spring is always welcome sooner than later.

There are quite a lot of things I love about Spring. Just to make a few of them, the cooler weather for sure, the beautiful blooming flowers (Cherry Blossoms and Tulips to be specific), but most of all, the idea of going back to the garden again.

It’s Gardening Time 🙂

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I am into gardening. On top of sharing recipes and travel adventures, I also love to share my love for gardening.

I started gardening during pandemic time. I was one of the lucky ones to get a plot from a community garden right across my building. Gardening brought so much joy into my life. It kept me sane and busy and I cannot express how thankful I am to have this opportunity.

In today’s post, I thought I would like to start by showing you my garden. I moved to this plot in the same community garden area just this year. I used to have a plot closer to the back by the fence. The location do not get as much sun and the weeds but the fence we’re horrible. I am very thankful that my request to move to a new plot was granted. A fellow gardener told me she was giving it up and I took the opportunity to request the move. This new location is perfect, it gets 6-8 hrs of sunlight during Summer and on top of that, it has a very well built strong fence which was my huge problem in my old garden and I was able to have a trellis!

My Community Garden Plot

Let me show you my garden. This is a 90×90 sq feet garden which is by far the largest size for the community garden. As you can see, there’s really nothing much yet as it is the early season. I’ve moved all my plants from my previous garden (it was a brutal task digging all the plants) and I can say this is almost 90% done. I still have some empty pots and containers that I have to cleanup but that’s not a hard one to do. This is the overview of how the plot looks like. It’s big for a community garden plot. Look at the sturdy fence! Love that I don’t have to rebuilt it.

Garden Right Side Area

Facing from the entrance, this is the right side of the garden. I have a trellis which was given to me by a fellow gardener who left the garden. I am not handy when it comes to building stuff, so being able to have this ready is such a blessing. I am very thankful for the help of a fellow gardener friends in moving this trellis. I could have not done this without their help. That area, I was planing to plant climbing flowers which I will discuss below, some vegetables and assorted plants and flowers. I have already planted potatoes on those two grow bags there. This side is what I am very excited to see progress. The trailing flowers will probably not be as abundant this year as I just planted them but nonetheless, I am looking forward to see this area progress. I will also be using the trellis to tie the tomatoes which I am hoping to grow more this year. There’s also a leaning trellis by the fence which is for beans and cucumbers.

Garden Left Side Corner

This is the left side of the garden. This side will be a mix of vegetables and flowers too. I’ve already started planted lettuce, peas, radish, arugula and beets.

I made a trellis from chicken wires I was thinking of what I can do with my carryover chicken wires from my previous plot and this is what I thought of. I like growing peas and beans and this would be perfect for the job. I planted the peas few weeks ago, a bit late that planned and they haven’t come out yet. Hopefully in my next garden update we can see some growth. I never knew how great fresh garden grow peas until I try them myself. the difference is night and day when it comes to freshness and crunch, not to mention they tend to be bigger and sweeter too. Peas are definitely a favourite Spring a Fall vegetable in my garden.

Center Back Corner – Garden Focal Point

This section here is mainly for plants and flowers. I like to this of this as the focal point of the garden. I love plants and flowers more than vegetables, that’s just how I am. I think because I don’t eat much so planting plenty of vegetables is not advisable for me to do. I’ve done it in my first year of gardening and a lot of my harvest I had to give away. This section I already planted peony, lily, tulips, snap dragons, rudbeckia, shatsa daisy, hellebore, wisteria, xx,xx.

Front Right Corner – More Flowers

Told you I love flowers 🙂 in front, I also have dedicated area for plants and flowers only. Here I have 2 roses, tulips, lily, peony, hollyhock, hydrangeas, echinacea, ornamental grass.

Hellebore – Early Bloomers

The first to bloom in the garden are these Hellebore. I am very impressed how hardy they are at zone 8. They were able to withstand the short snot days with a little help of a light frost cover.

Peonies

Peony is one of the flowers that I look forward to during Spring. They bloom around June – July sometimes early May depending on the weather. I have 5 Peony in the garden. 2 whites, 1 fuschia and 2 baby pink. The baby pink is the latest addition and this year is the first year that it will bloom. I most excited about this one as I always fancy the soft pink color.

Roses

2 roses that’s what we have here. They’re both a hybrid with color blend. I used to have 3 of them and so far only these 2 survive. The one of the left almost didn’t make it.

Tulips

This year I don’t expect too many Tulips. I managed to dig quite a few of them from my previous plot but it doesn’t look like they will have nice bloom. Next year I’ll try to plant again.

Hydrangea

This is the 3rd year that I have this and so far I was not able to make it flower again. It wasn’t getting much sun in the previous location and hopefully this new location will generate flowers.

Wisteria

I am obsessed with Wisteria! I just got this few days ago and I am very excited to see this grow. I don’t expect it to flower this year but hopefully it gets to at least survive for the next year to bloom.

Clematis

Another vining flower, Clematis. One of the reason why I am dying to have a trellis is because of this flower. I had been wanting to grow vibing flower for a long time and I cannot be anymore happier and thankful that I finally have a trellis to make this dream come true. Shallow as it may sound for a dream but it makes me happy 🙂

Lily

We’re going to have an abundance of Lily! I managed to dig and move as much Lily that I can find in my previous plot. I was skeptical and worried if they will grow again as the digging and the move was a bit harsh. So far, it seems that they managed to survive. I can already see a lot of them peaking above.

Mint

Mint along with Basil and Rosemary are the 3 herbs that I love growing in the garden. I use them all the time. I often discard mint after the season is over, but last year I decided to leave it in the garden in a pot. Happy to see that they manage to survive the winter.

Round Bucket Flower Pot

This bucket! I love this galvanized round bucket. I got this in my first year of gardening and kept it since then. I have assorted flowers in here. I have to add more to maximize the space.

So far that’s what I have for green April update. That was a long post 🙂 stay tune for next month update to follow how these planting progress.
