Warm turnover filled with homemade Apple Filling, wrap in flaky buttery puff pastry and finished off by drizzling cinnamon glaze on top. What’s not to love? So before we dive into to the recipe, let us watch the short video that I made on how to make this Cinnamon Glaze Apple Turnover.

Let’s talk about this recipe, and what you need to make this delicious Fall treat happen. There are 2 major steps in this recipe, assuming you decide to make you own puff pastry recipe, which means only 1 simple steps if you decide to use store-bought puff pastry. I am guessing you made your decision and decided to use the store-bought one? I’m with you on that.

Puff Pastry – Homemade or Store-bought

I am all in with anything homemade, but when it comes to making turnovers, I personally prefer using store-bought puff pastry for several reason. First, not only that is is very easy and convenient, but most of all store-bought puff pastry have even thickness, that is if you are using the puff pastry sheets that you only have to unroll or unfold. It also comes in an even size, either a perfect rectangle or perfect square which makes the cutting and diving easier and even as well. For this recipe, I used a puff pastry sheet and had it divided into 4 equal (almost) portion.

Now, if you do not have time to buy a puff pastry and you are dying to make a turnover, no worries. I got you cover. I have here a short video on how to make your own Puff Pastry at home, the SIMPLIFIED way. No folding, no long wait, just simple easy steps that is guaranteed to give you a nice butter flaky Homemade Puff Pastry. Watch the Video now and see how easy it is to make it at home. Once done, simply roll the puff pastry into a 10 x10 size of about 1/4-inch thick. Cut, fill, bake and enjoy!

Apple Turnover

The Apple Filling

Very easy to make this at home. Just Granny Smith apple, sugar, cornstarch, salt, cinnamon and butter. I like using Granny Smith apple because it has tartness that is nice for making it into pie filling. It is also firmer so it doesn’t get mushy when cooked, and we do not like mushy filling. We want to feel the bits and pieces of Apple when we bite into the turnover. Now if you do not have time, you can also use store-bought Apple Pie filling. But seriously this is very easy to make, so give it a try.

The Cinnamon Glaze

Do not skip! This made a huge difference in this turnover. The cinnamon sugar glaze, the flaky puff pastry and the warm apple filling are perfect combination. It is a simple icing sugar, water (or milk) and cinnamon powder mixture.

Best served the same day they are made

Although baked turnover can be refrigerated or even freeze, it is always best to serve it the day that it was made. This way you get to enjoy the flaky puff pastry. Rather than freezing baked turnover for later serving, I would suggest freeze it unbaked instead. Shape, fill and freeze then bake when you need it. This way, you get to enjoy it fresh. No need to thaw, bake straight from the freezer, you might need to add 2 -3 minutes in the baking time.

More Fall Spices

You will notice that I do not add a lot of Fall spices in here, and even in any of my Fall recipes. I am not a huge fan of Fall spices so I always keep it simple with just a hint of cinnamon powder. If you happen to love Fall spices, which I know a lot of people do, then feel free to add it to the Apple Pie filling when making it, or even in the icing glaze.

Small Batch Cinnamon Glaze Apple Turnover

I love this Apple Turnover recipe, it was good, as in really good. The flaky puff pastry, the warm homemade apple filling and the sugar glaze on top are just so great together. The ratio of apple filling to the puff–pastry is just perfect, not too overwhelming and not too less as well. Even my friends who doesn’t like eating apple desserts love this Apple Turnover. For me, it has to be a balance between the amount of filling and the pastry dough. But hey, if you love apple overload, then feel free to overload it just make sure not to go crazy as it will ooze out and burst from the puff-pastry as it bakes. Go easy dear 🙂 Enjoy your pie the way you love it. Let’s get started!

Small Batch Apple Turnover

Ingredients:

Cinnamon Glaze:

  • 1/3 cup Confectioners Sugar/Icing Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Milk or Water
  • 1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 4000F.
  2. Roll out puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 4″x4″ squares, or any size or shape that you like.
    • If using homemade puff-pastry, flatten the puff-pastry to about 1/4-inch thick
  3. Prepare the Egg Wash: In a small bowl whisk together egg and 1 tsp water. Lightly brush  around the perimeter of each square on all sides, creating a border.
  4. Fill: Spoon 1-2 tbsp of the Apple Filling into the center of the square. Do not be tempted to put more as you will have difficulty sealing it.
  5. Seal: Fold pastry over to create a triangle, and with a fork that has been dipped in flour, press all  the edges of the pastry down to create a seal.
  6. Chill: Put in the freezer minimum 15 minutes to get the pastry really cold before baking. You can freeze it longer (1-2 weeks) and bake when needed. Wrap it in foil and put in a zip lock bag. Remove the foil and bake straight from the freezer, no need to thaw.
  7. Brush with Egg Wash: Transfer to a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly brush the tops of the turnovers with egg wash and sprinkle lightly with sugar (about 1/8 tsp).
  8. Bake: Place turnovers in a preheated oven. Bake 20-25 minutes or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed up. When baking frozen pie, add 2 – 3 (or more) minutes or until turnovers are golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Make the Cinnamon Glaze: In a small bowl, mix together confectioners sugar, water or milk and cinnamon. Stir until smooth and fluid. If you like a thicker glaze, add more sugar.
  10. Serve: Drizzle top of each  turnovers with cinnamon glaze.
