Let’s have some Matcha Milk Drink 🍵 today. I had been wanting to make a matcha drink for a long time now, I am glad I finally managed to do so. What stopped me from making this drink was the Matcha powder that I bought last time looked like mud when I diluted it. I don’t know if there was something wrong with it but it doesn’t really looks inviting for me to drink. I feel bad throwing it but it was really not useable. So I bought a new pack nand finally managed to get something of good quality. With matcha drink, good quality matcha matters.

Why Matcha & Milk are a Perfect Pair
Matcha is naturally robust, slightly bitter, and packed with umami. Milk softens its intensity, creating a well-rounded drink that’s creamy but still allows matcha’s unique taste to shine. Depending on your choice of milk—whether dairy, oat, almond, or soy—you can customize the richness and texture to suit your preferences. I always use full fat dairy milk but if I have to choose a non-dairy, I would choose coconut or Almond Milk.
Choosing the Right Matcha: How to Spot Quality
Not all matcha is created equal! Here’s how to identify high-quality matcha for the best experience:
- Color: Good matcha is vibrant green, indicating freshness and high chlorophyll content. If it looks dull or yellowish, it’s likely lower-grade.
- Texture: It should be finely ground, almost like baby powder. Clumpy or coarse matcha may not dissolve well.
- Taste: Premium matcha is naturally smooth with subtle sweetness, while lower grades can taste harsh or overly bitter.

How To Make Simple Sugar Syrup
Simple syrup is simply dissolved and lightly reduced sugar + water. The basic ratio is 1:1, meaning 1 part sugar to 1 part water (i.e 1 cup sugar: 1 cup water), it is basically an equal portion of sugar and water.
However, if you like it thick and sweeter, you can do a 1:2 ratio (i.e 1/2 cup water : 1 cup sugar). The yield will be less, but it is thicker and sweeter which use you use less of it.
You can make sugar syrup using granulated white sugar for a clear syrup OR light or dark brown sugar for a darker syrup. The darker syrup are great for coffee or dark tea based drinks as this will not affect the color of the drink that much.
The clear syrup are best for drinks that you want to retain the original color without making it brownish in color. The clear white syrup tends to be sweeter than the brown sugar, but brown sugar have that light caramel flavor from the molasses in the brown sugar. In the end, it all boils down to preference.
Tips for Making the Perfect Matcha Milk Drink
Matcha can be tricky, but mastering a few steps will ensure a flawless drink:
- Sift the Matcha – Helps prevent clumps for a smoother blend.
- Use Warm (Not Boiling) Water – Too much heat can make matcha taste bitter. Around 160–175°F is ideal.
- Whisk Properly – Using a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a zigzag motion helps create froth and ensures the matcha is fully dissolved. I used an electric frother and it worked just fine. Use what you have, Important thing is to m ake suer the matcha is fully dissolve.

Sweetening Your Matcha Milk Drink
Matcha has a naturally earthy depth, but adding a touch of sweetener can enhance its appeal.
- Simple Syrup: A neutral sweetness that dissolves effortlessly.
- Honey: Adds floral notes that pair beautifully with matcha.
- Maple Syrup: A subtle caramel-like sweetness that blends well.
- Condensed milk is another excellent option for a richer, indulgent touch!
- Granulated Sugar: gives a nuetral sweetness but be careful when using garnulated sugar. Add the sugar when whisking the matcha so ti dissolves better with the mixture.
