I am a morning person, and even on a weekend, I cannot helped by wake up early. 6:00am on a weekend is early, at least that’s what I used to think. Lately I have been waking up this early on most of the weekend and I’ve gotten used to it. In fact, I started liking it. Waking up early while while the neighbour hood is still sleeping means a quiet surrounding plus morning walks or run are very peaceful and relaxing. I love it …
Another activity that is started doing when I am up early on a weekend is to go out for breakfast. I used to feel a bit guilty going out for breakfast because everything now is more expensive, but I told myself it is not a luxury but more of self care. I need to treat myself from time to time, a day off from my kitchen to enjoy what other people make is not a badidea. Not only that it gives me a relaxing start of the day, but it also gives me idea on what I can re-create at home. As long as I do not go crazy spending a lot for eating out, I think it is a reasonable activity that keeps me sane and happy.

Today I am taking you with me to my visit at Hazukido Cafe. I saw this cafe when I was browning in Instagram and immediately researched about it. I love pastry, Croissants to be specific and anything flaky and filled with custard cream or dipped in chocolate. I decided immediately that I will visit this place one of the weekend that I wake up early. Today is the day.

This branch opend just few months ago, and yet people are already flocking and lining up for their croissants. They also sell beverage, both hot or cold. There is so many options, Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall.

I checked their website before visiting the cafe, and OMG, those Croissants looks sinfully delicious! They have a lot of variations from sweet to savory, filled with custard cream or dipped in chocolate. It was like a shopping day looking at these lovely Croissants, I want to try all of them. I picked my favorite hoping that they will be available on the day of my visit. But really, it is Croissant, if they make it good then any flavor will be great. From me Croissant is all about layers and flakiness, followed by the filling and toppings. If they get these things right, then sweet or savory, filled or not, it doesn’t matter. Sign me in, I’ll try any of them.

Got there on a Sunday, it wears very accessible from Yaletown station or a car if you are driving. The place was not that big, decent size but modern, clean and cozy. They have few sitting area for those who would like to eat inside. They already have a lot available when I got there, and also a lot there were gone and being replenished.

The cafe was not that big, but it was clean, modern and comfortable. There are few sitting areas with tables and on the side is a high chair are. When I got there it wasn’t as busy because they just opened, but at around 11 people started coming in. I was able to grab a nice spot by the window, a cozy chair and a small table. There was music playing, it was a small lovely place to spend weekend morning.

I bought a box of six, that’s a lot for one I know 🙂 But I want to try different variations, plus they are actually smaller than regular Croissants. The first thing I noticed about their Croissant is the size, they are smaller than the usual Croissant that other Cafe sells. Probably 1/2 the size, they are quite small for a Croissant that I am used to. Size aside, the Croissant looks amazing and inviting. So many variations to choose from, I’ll definitely go back next time to try the others. I got mostly cream filled, Raspberry Panacota, Custard, Chocolate, Almond Caramel, Chicken & … each piece cost between 5 -6CAD, the one savory one which is the Chicken is about 6CAD. I like to have savory and sweet and the chicken so far is the one savory that they have that looks interesting. They also have the cheese and garlic but they look just fine and ordinary to me.

So let’s see how these Croissants taste like ..
Texture – The croissant have a nice layers which is a trademark of a good Croissant, thumbs up for that. It was flakey ok, but for some reason it was a bit soft to me, not the crunchy flakiness that I look for a Croissant. It was still good, it has the flakiness not just as much as what I am hoping for. But overall, texture was good.

Flavoring – ok, this one is interesting. They have quite a lot of variations and flavors to choose from. I only selected 6 and tried the chicken and the classic custard filled first. They are small but quite heavy and we know why. With the amount of butter in the Croissant, not surprising that these small Croissants are quite filling. Both tasted great. The chicken was flavorful and delicious. The classic Custard was amazing. There was a lot of custard filling inside which I enjoyed a lot, were not talking about a doll up of custard, but a generous custard filling which how it is supposed to be. The custard itself was .. perfection. Light, creamy, delicious. I wouldn’t mind getting one of this again, at least after I tried all the rest 🙂

Size – Well, as I mentioned before, they are quite small. To be honest, they are quite expensive for the size, but at least it taste great for the amount they are charging. But if you are looking for more value for money in terms of size and flavor, try Angus. Angus is also located in Yaletown, about 5 minutes away from this place. Check out my post here if you are interested about Angus. They have smaller size but the cream filled ones are generously filled which I appreciate a lot. Angus on the other hand have almost twice the size but very small amount of filling, I guess because it is a big Croissant to fill.

Overall, I would definitely go back to this place. The Croissant are great, the service was quick and good, the place was clean and comfortable. I cannot wait to try the other variations.

Ok, time to go. Bye now! Until my next food trip adventure.

Sounds like a great way to care for yourself! Here’s an offering to a fellow early riser:
Why I Wake Early by Mary Oliver
Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who made the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the
miserable and the crotchety –
best preacher that ever was,
dear star, that just happens
to be where you are in the universe
to keep us from ever-darkness,
to ease us with warm touching,
to hold us in the great hands of light –
good morning, good morning, good morning.
Watch, now, how I start the day
in happiness, in kindness.
