Well, I didn’t think it was possible because most of the recipe for Apple chips are at least 3 Ingredients, Apple, sugar and spices which is cinnamon. But this version is nothing else but Apple, and trust me when I say it was delicious!! I’m so excited with this recipe and at the same time I wanted to share with you my inspiration for this recipe (if you can call that).

healthy apple chips

This Crispy Bake Apple Chips was inspired by a salad from Panera Bread in Denver Colorado. Actually, it was my office mate who ordered the salad topped with apple chips. He offered me a piece to taste, and I was floored and I fell in love with the apple chips as soon as I ate it. It’s was so crispy, crunchy and it taste and absolutely delicious, fresh and natural. It doesn’t have any sugar or salt, it was thin but it has the natural sweetness of the apple. It didn’t take me a long time before I set my mind that I am going to make my own Apple Chips as soon as I get back home. As so I kept my promise and made it the second day I got home. I cannot be anymore happier than the result, absolutely delicious and worth the wait.

Here are 3 simple tips for a delicious crunchy Apple Chips

Just Apple

I used red delicious apple, but you can use other Apple like Fuji, Granny Smith, Ambrosia or any Apple you have. A mix of different Apple is nice too, however you may want to separate them in different tray as certain type of Apple my need longer baking time.

As even and thin as possible

This is very important for the drying process. The thinner and even the slices, the better texture you will get. I used my fruit slicer similar to Mandolin Slicer for even thickness, but if you do not have one, you can use a knife and slice as thin and even as possible. The thinner the slices, the faster it will dry, and the crunchier it will get.

It takes time, but its worth the wait

The more juicy and watery the Apple, the longer time you will need to bake it to get it dry. I would say for starter, just choose 1 type of Apple. Play with the baking time, and adjust as needed until you get the Apple into the dried stage. It took me about 3 hours to get it into dried crunchy stage. Almost all the recipe I saw in Pinterest say 2 hours, 1 hour each side. I find that at 2 hours the Apple are still moist, so I extended it 1 hour more and left it too cool inside the oven until there is no more heat inside. As the Apple sit inside the oven, it dries out even more, make it crispy and crunchy.

Do NOT over crowd the pan

Use a big cookie sheet and do not over crowd the pan. Do not make double layers, single layer only so that all the Apple sits on top of the cookie sheet. This is very important in the drying process. If you create double layer, the Apple on the top (second layer) will not dry out properly.

plain homemade apple chips

This recipe is so simple, and although it takes a long time to make it, it’s really worth the wait. A healthy crunchy homemade fresh Apple Chips that you can munch on anytime, its delicious, less the salt and oil on most commercialize chips.  I hope you’ll give it a try. Let’s get started!

Ingredient:

  • 2 pieces Red Delicious Apple (or any Apple of your choice) – Just Apple, told you 🙂

Instruction:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200F
  2. Wash the Apple and Wipe. Cut the Apple as thin and even as possible. The faster you cut it, the better to avoid browning. Arrange in a parchment lined cookie sheet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. I used 2 tray to for 2 Apples.
  3. Bake 1.5 hours each side. Once the Apple starts to dry, the edges will curl like ruffles. Leave inside the oven to further dry. When there is no more heat left in the oven, remove and transfer in an air tight container.
