So, back to this chocolate hummus. I made it, tried it and I loved it! It’s so smooth, it’s decadent and so chocolatey, it’s light and it made me feel less guilty after eating quite a lot of it. I’ve used this to make Babka, for spread on toast, for dipping fresh fruits and sometimes I eat it just on its own. Just like the old times when I sat on a corner, with a jar of peanut butter and a spoon in my hand. Yes, simple pleasures of life. Give in! Let me show you how easy this is to make. Ingredients for Making Chocolate Hummus

  • Chickpea – I used canned chickpea for this one because it is very convenient and I wa sin a rush when I made this. You can cook your own chickpea if you have time.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder – This is what will give the hummus the chocolate flavor. It will also help bind the ingredients together. Do not be tempted to replace it with melted chocolate as melted chocolate hardens as it cools and you will end up with a hard hummus.
  • Maple Syrup – You can sweetne this anyway you like. Honey will work as well. Just remember that when substituting sweetnere, the measurement will vary. Also, consider the cosistency of the sweetner you are using. Maple tends to be more runny than honey, as hiney is mre sticky. This could affect the consistency. I suggest add the sweetnere gradually if you are not sure how much you should add.
  • Vanilla Extract – This is totally optional but if you have it, use it.
  • Salt – Do not skip salt. Salt enhances the flavor of the hummus.
  • Confectioners Sugar (optional) – this is optional as you already added maple syrup. Nut in my case, instead of adding more maple syrup and thinning out the consistency, I simply added confectioners sugar to add sweetness wihtout making the hummus thinner.
  • Tahini – I love the nutty taste of Tahini, if you do not have t , you can skip it.
  • Chickpea Water – ONLY as needed to thin out the consistency. If at the end you still find the consistency thick, then use some of the chickpea water. Do this at the very end.

How to Make Chocolate Hummus

This is such an easy recipe but unfortunately you will need a high poweded blender or food processor to make this hummus at least if you want a smooth creamy consistency. Everything is don in the machine. Simply add all the ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy. If you want to control the sweetness and consistency, you can add the liquid (maple syrup, tahini and chickpea water) gradually, add 1/2 of each first and adjust as needed. This is my preferred consistency so I am good dumping all ingredients at once and blending it.

I love Nutella more than I can express, but I always feel guilty eating more than a spoonful of it, I guess it’s because it’s so decadent, so chocolatey, so creamy, so sinfully and dangerously delicious. I would gladly jumpt fo an opprtunity to use it in my baked goodies, its like all the good things in life rolled into one jar of chocolate and it will always have a special place in my heart. So, I’m not saying goodbye to Nutella, I’m not ready for that yet. I’m just opening another door to welcome new option. As we all know, options and variations are good. So I say bring them in and let’s have a look.

Although hummus and chocolate seems to be a weird combination, I decided to give it a go. Sometimes I can be non-traditional when it comes to baking and cooking. I like trying new stuff, and most of the time I ended up liking them. Sometimes it could be just a simple vegetable that I haven’t tried, like Brussels Sprouts and Beets. Have you seen my Grilled Brussels Sprouts Skewers? Or the Beets an Carrots Salad? They’re my new veggie favorite and they’re both amazing in their own way. Sometimes it’s an ingredient used in different way, like my Zucchini Chocolate Muffins or Black Beans Chocolate Cupcakes. I’m always open to new ideas, I love trying new food.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Can Chickpea (540ml)
  • 4 tablespoon Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 5 tablespoon Maple Syrup (more or less depending on your sweetness level preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon table Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Confectioners Sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoon Tahini
  • 2 tablespoon Chickpea Water – ONLY as needed to thin out the consistency

Instructions:

  1. Wash and drain chickpeas. Rinse the chickpea and transfer in a bowl with water. Reserve about 2 tablespoon of the chickpea water in case you want to thin out the consistency later.Using your hands, rub the chickpea to easily remove the skin. The skin will automatically float on top once removed.
  2. Puree the Ingredients: Put all ingredients in the food processor, except water. Use the water only if you want a thinner consistency, otherwise you can leave it out. Process until texture becomes smooth, around 3-4 minutes. Gradually add water (as needed) and continue mixing until you get the consistency that you like. You can skip the water if you want a thick hummus consistency, or if you want it sweeter add more maple syrup instead of water.
  3. Serve: Transfer in a bowl or container and sprinkle some chopped almonds on top. This can be use as dip or spread just like Nutella.
